To gain significant momentum towards the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit and
support the Government of Japan's strong stand on water and sanitation
issues, a side-event at the Commission for Sustainable Development convened
participants of the 16th Commission for Sustainable Development at the
United Nations in New York City, for an exchange of views on the "Water and
Sanitation: Message to G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit." The side-event was
co-organized by Japan Water Forum, Asia-Pacific Water Forum, Asia Society,
UNICEF, UNSGAB and WaterAid, and supported by the Permanent Mission of Japan
to the United Nations. A keynote address was delivered by Dr. Takahiro
Shinyo, Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary / Deputy Permanent
Representative of Japan to the United Nations. The Japan Water Forum
presented the 1st Asia-Pacific Water Summit focusing on its political
impact, and WaterAid presented the "Major Groups' Message on Water and
Sanitation to the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit." A panel discussion,
facilitated by Ms. Margaret Catley-Carlson, Member of UNSGAB / Former Chair
of Global Water Partnership, followed with the representatives from the
co-organizers of the event.

"Why Effective Water Resource Management in Africa is Critical?"

In the context of the upcoming TICAD IV meetings in May (the Fourth Tokyo International Conference for African Development),
the role of clean water and effective water resources management will be a key theme.
This seminar, co-organized with the Japan Water Forum, will discuss the challenges of water resource management in Africa,
introducing the World Bank's experience, and the perspective of the Japan Water Forum to link
the experience and lessons of water management in Asia to the African continent.

International Year of Sanitation

With 2008 designated as the International Year of Sanitation what are the key water and sanitation issues
to be addressed and what will Japan's role be on the World scene?
UNICEF, the Japan Water Forum, the World Bank, and UNDP are convening international experts to share their
insight and discuss opportunities for action in Africa and Asia given that Japan will host TICAD IV and G-8 this year.
Mr. Masahiko Koumura, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, will address water and sanitation issues.
Mr. Ravi Narayanan (Vice-Chair of the Asia-Pacific Water Forum Governing Council) and
Ms. Vanessa Tobin (Deputy Director, Programme Division of UNICEF) will address water
and sanitation goals and challenges in Africa and Asia, including climate change.
A panel discussion with Mr. Kazushi Hashimoto (Executive Director, JBIC),
Ambassador from the Republic of Kenya, and an official from DANONE WATERS OF JAPAN Co., Ltd,
among others will deepen the discussion prior to a Q/A session taking questions from the audience.
