The Japan Water Forum(specified nonprofit organization, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Chair:Kotaro Takemura, Ph.D.)has been co-organizing the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize 2024* in collaboration with the Kyoto City and the World Water Council (WWC, French non-governmental organization).
We have received numerous applications. The Kyoto World Water Grand Prize Selection Committee, composed of representatives from Kyoto City, the World Water Council, and the Japan Water Forum, conducted an evaluation emphasizing contributions to “culture” and “community” and the sustainability of the initiatives.
As a result of the rigorous evaluation, we are pleased to announce that the prize is awarded to the Indonesian organization, the Youth Sanitation Concern.
The organization has been recognized for addressing the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic by building local sanitation infrastructure (public toilets). Also their efforts to expand hygiene habits among local residents through awareness activities were acknowledged. Furthermore, the community’s collaborative management practices of the facilities after the project implementation was highly praised.
In May 2024, the 10th World Water Forum will be held in Bali, Indonesia. The award ceremony for the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize will take place during the closing ceremony, with a prize of 2 million Japanese yen being presented to the Youth Sanitation Concern.
*The Kyoto World Water Grand Prize was established in 2003 as an international award recognizing grassroots organizations that have been making outstanding contributions to solving water issues in developing countries. Since then, it has been held every three years in conjunction with the World Water Forum.
